Stone Age Activity Day
Stone Age Outdoor Activity Experience for KS2 (Years 3 & 4)
An exciting, curriculum-linked outdoor learning programme designed to bring the Stone Age to life for primary pupils.
The Outdoor Elements Stone Age Outdoor Activity Experience is a full-day event split into three fully interactive sessions.
Working in groups of up to 12, children are guided by our enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructors as they journey back around 10,000 years.
Set in our ancient woodland, each activity helps pupils understand what life was really like in the Stone Age while meeting Key Stage 2 History curriculum requirements.
Session 1: Shelter Building
Children explore how early humans protected themselves from the elements.
- Discover natural shelters such as hollow trees and a real cave
- Build shelters using sticks, rocks, and other natural materials
- Learn how nomadic people used animal skins and natural ropes
- Create a Stone Age style tipi and test whether it can withstand a “storm”
Session 2: Gathering and Foraging
This session explores how early people sourced food from the land.
- Identify and taste seasonal edible plants found in our woodland
- Learn how humans progressed from foraging to farming
- Discuss how wheat was cultivated to make flour and then prepared to make simple Stone Age bread
- Use flint and steel to light a fire
- Make a simple bread mix and cook over the fire, with optional foraged ingredients such as wild garlic
Session 3: Hunting and Early Weapons
Pupils investigate how early humans hunted for food.
- Explore the development of weapons from rocks and sticks to spears
- Handle simple replica weapons made from natural materials
- Practise aiming at wild animal targets
- Try the iconic Stone Age invention: the bow and arrow
- Discuss how farming animals reduced the need to hunt and how this shaped modern life
