Explorer Activity Day
The Great Explorers: Quest for Survival – A Curriculum Linked Outdoor Adventure for KS1
Inspire your KS1 pupils with a magical journey into the world of a great explorer. This full-day outdoor learning experience follows the story of a fictional adventurer navigating unknown lands, giving children hands-on opportunities to explore, imagine and learn through play.
Designed specifically for KS1, the programme includes three engaging sessions that bring the theme of exploration and survival to life.
Session 1: Journey into the Unknown
Children discover that explorers survive best when they work together. As they travel through the woodland, they take on a series of age appropriate physical problem solving challenges that encourage teamwork, communication and resilience.
Challenges may include:
- Glacier Crossing
- Snow Blinded
- Frozen Sea
- Man Overboard
Each activity is carefully pitched for KS1 and mirrors the real-world challenges faced by explorers throughout history, helping children understand the importance of teamwork.
Session 2: Fire and Cooking Bread
Using flint and steel, children experience the excitement of creating a spark and lighting a fire under close supervision. The campfire becomes the heart of the session as pupils forage for seasonal natural ingredients, make simple dough and bake their own bread over the flames. It’s a hands on, sensory and delicious experience that links beautifully to survival skills, materials and food origins.
Session 3: Sheltering from the Storm
Imaginative play takes centre stage as children work together to build a woodland shelter using tarps, ropes and sticks. Their mission: create a safe hideaway before the “storm” arrives. This session encourages creativity, teamwork and problem solving while deepening children’s connection to the natural environment.
