Orienteering at Outdoor Elements

A dynamic physical challenge to navigate unfamiliar terrain using a map and find the checkpoints to retrieve the code

Discover the freedom and excitement of Orienteering

Orienteering is an enjoyable activity where participants must use a map to find controls or checkpoints. The aim is to retrieve information in the form of code letters and return them to the start/ finish point in the fastest time. Participants can work in small teams, which fosters clear communication and collaborative problem-solving. The activity is often competitive with teams trying to be the first to return with all the correct answers. Teams will experience a satisfying sense of accomplishment and strengthen team relationships. Being outdoors allows participants to connect with nature whilst getting some exercise in the fresh air of the relaxed woodland setting.

Why Try Orienteering?

  • Inclusive: our approach means everyone gets a chance to contribute, learn, and celebrate success together
  • Work on team skills: communication, support, trust and resilience
  • Fun! An exciting feeling of racing against the clock to complete the challenge
  • Brilliant way to connect with nature, as the courses are set within a stunning private woodland environment
  • Tailored sessions: suitable for early years children through to adults, with a number of different courses, the difficulty level of the session is pitched accordingly

What to Expect from an Orienteering Session

Each session is carefully pitched to the type of group, with the appropriate level of difficulty and coaching. The session will include an introduction to the map features and how to use the map to orientate with the surroundings and navigate to desired locations. Often, a practice on the basic course is used to check participants’ understanding before setting them off on the main challenge event. We have 4 different levels of difficulty available, from basic star event courses to challenge courses covering the whole area of our private seven-acre woodland. Participants will take part in small groups dependent on their age and ability.

The objective is to retrieve the code letters from the controls (checkpoints) located on the map. This activity is often presented as a competitive event between groups to complete the course in the quickest time.
