Bug Bug Hunting at Outdoor Elements

Experience a fun, hands-on activity exploring and learning all about the hidden world of Bugs. Perfect for KS1

A KS1 Bug Hunting session at Outdoor Elements is a memorable, experiential learning session. The session starts with the children getting into the minds of creepy crawlies and thinking about where bugs might live and why, as well as a briefing on why we don’t want to hurt any of these tiny creatures. The children will then set off with a collection pot and a bug catcher 3000 (plastic spoon) to try to find as many bugs as they can. They will have to explore the range of different habitats in our woodland, like leaf litter, under logs, tree bark, wildflowers and even in the stream.

Once they have found and caught a creepy crawly, it is taken to a central base where it is temporarily placed into a bug hotel (specimen tray), where the whole group can study the vast array of mini beasts. Using magnifying glasses and Identification sheets, the children will be able to name animals such as woodlice, worms, beetles, and centipedes.

An exciting addition to this session is to explore the unique habitat of the stream that runs through the woodland. With the help of a net, the instructor will demonstrate the simple art of collecting Kick Samples and placing their catch into the bug swimming pool (specimen tray). The children react with astonishing surprise when they find what is in their catch.

Our knowledgeable instructors will help the children to understand a little about how these creatures survive with loads of fun facts and the important role they perform within the ecosystem of the woodland. At the end of the session, the children are involved in gently returning their newfound friends to the habitat to which they belong.
